Established at the end of the 19th century as a holiday residence and hunting base of the Bulgarian Royal family, in the 1970s Borovets turned into a modern international ski centre, and has since been twice the host of the World Cup Alpine skiing tournaments.
Just a mere 76 km away from Sofia, Borovets offers excellent conditions for all ski disciplines; alpine, cross-country, biathlon, snowboarding and ski jumping. The winter season lasts over six months – November to May, with a snow cover thicker than 1.5 m, while the coldest month – January – has an average temperature of -4.5 oC.
